Wine Uncorked

Still More Sparklers...

Still More Sparklers…

Several other sparklers stood out during the tasting, including three from Italy and one from Austria:

Cantine del Taburno Aglianico Rosé Extra Dry NV

Aglianico is a red grape that makes some pretty stunning dry red wine, so it’s not much of a surprise that this bubbly iteration is GOOD! It’s gorgeous with notes of fruit and spice – very sexy!  $18

Sorelle Casa “Secco” Italian Bubbles Bianco 2011

This wine blends Chardonnay with Pinot Bianco and native grape Raboso Piave to make this delicious wine.  It’s voluptuous, round and full, offering lots of fruit flavor without being overly fruity.  $12

Bortolotti Prosecco Brut NV

This is one of the few artisanal Prosecco wines from a region known for their industrial production.  Grapes are produced organically, and the wine is very pretty, seducing with its restrained flavors and bubbles.  This estate also makes a sparkling Lagrein Rosato worth seeking out.  $16

Bründlmayer Sekt Extra-Brut NV

This wine literally opened my eyes – I took a sip and went, whoo! The flavors are arresting, thanks to the blend of Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc, Chardonnay and Grüner Veltliner.   An unusual and refreshing wine.  $39
