I don’t “get” Collectionary, a web site that is “a Dictionary of everything in the world that people collect.” But given the number of items on the site, it could be just me.
The site is broken down into hundreds of different Collectionaries (collection + dictionary) that range from the expected – Elvis, sports memorabilia and Harley Davidson – to the more esoteric, like quilting, butterflies and Strawberry Shortcake.
Suffice to say, there is a wine Collectionary. It’s filled with photos of wine bottles both empty and full, all manner of corkscrews and stoppers, wine-inspired art from a 1970s painting to metal sculptures, and much more.
Some items are vintage, such as a 1936 advert for Bonal Chartreuse and others new, like a Brookstone Iceless Wine Chiller. There is kitschy – a wine bottle holder shaped like a pirate, the bottle poised as if he is drinking it. And there is sweet – a small gold charm shaped like a wine bucket, with a fake bottle of bubbly and small pearls as the ice.
Many items show a price history, many are for sale, and others have a “notify me when one is on sale” button. Anyone can browse, but you do need to sign up in order to become a moderator with posting privileges.
It must be said, I did get a kick out of scrolling through the pages, so whether your interest is in wine or other memorabilia (seeing a Snoopy lunch box brought back memories!), it’s definitely worth a stop by.
